Mastering the Habit of Goal Setting

“Setting goals is the first step in turning invisible into the visible.” –Tony Robbins

You would have heard it said that writing your goals down is the most important step in achieving your goals;  I write my goals down a lot, however, writing your goals down is not the most important step in achieving them – SEEing them is!

To explain this further, let’s consider four classes of people –

Class A – Lack clarity about what you really want from life.

Class B – Regularly dream of a better life but you never take action to make it happen.

Class C – Know what you want to be, do and have but you don’t know how to move from dream to reality.

Class D – Lack a clear sense of direction.

Don’t just think writing your goals down is enough – be clear as to what you desire from achieving your goals, that will give the fuel.

One thing is common to all the above, lack of clarity – they lack clarity of vision about the life they want to live. The reason for this lack of clarity is that they have committed little, or no, time to developing clarity of vision. People will take sufficient time to think about their vacation, the clothes they want to wear, the TV shows they want to watch, the lives and styles of their favourite celebrity but they are unwilling to spend a little time each week, each day developing clarity of vision regarding their future. The end result of these choices is a life spent chasing instant gratification at the expense of personal fulfilment.

Don’t just think writing your goals down is enough – be clear as to what you desire from achieving your goals, that will give the fuel. The fuel provides the motivation when the going is tough and the goals look unachievable. Also, clarity will give you inventiveness in the pursuit of your dreams, and believe me – most things in life don’t go as planned, resourcefulness is a golden rule – “Necessity is the mother of invention“. It means, roughly, that the primary driving force for most new inventions is a need, a seeing!

NOTE: define your goals, define clearly the end result, imagine them, embrace them in your mind’s eye and allow it fuel you to its accomplishment.

It is easy to think that goal setting is a simple matter of listing out all the things you want but this process is unlikely to produce effective goals. Effective goals are aligned with the vision you have for the life you want to create. It is this alignment that motivates you to take the necessary action, regardless of the level of difficulty or sacrifice required.

2018 comes first on us all, don’t join the group who believes writing your 2018 goals/resolutions/targets will make you achieve anything in 2018, you will achieve nothing expect a shiny written goal in a sheet of paper likely to hunt you in other years – but, clearly SEEING that end result(and letting it sip to the depth of your being) will launch you away from the bottom crowded congregation of the goal-not-achieving majority and sky-high to the temple of the true believers who achieving goals is a daily reality. Again, effective goals are aligned with the vision you have for the life you want to create. It is this alignment that motivates you to take the necessary action, regardless of the level of difficulty or sacrifice required – it is at this point your dream becomes reality.

Seeing your goals clearly gives you –

  1. Clear Sense of Direction
  2. Continuous Progression
  3. Improved Results
  4. Better Opportunites
  5. Increased Status
  6. Motivation and Passion
  7. Zest For Life
